Immigration: The Making of Home and Place • April 19 & 20, 2017

The Annual Research Conference at Inver Hills Community College will take place Wednesday and Thursday, April 19 and 20, 2017. This spring’s conference will explore the phenomenon of immigration with a focus on Minnesota. Questions examined will include:

  • What are our stories of immigration?
  • How have our many immigrant groups shaped our state’s culture, social structure, economy and politics—and how do those groups continue to do so today?
  • What are the challenges immigrants face in Minnesota and how can we best address those challenges as a welcoming community?

Ways to participate

  1. Present a research paper (15 minutes, including time for questions and discussion).
  2. Present a poster you design. Attend a one-hour poster session and field questions.
  3. Attend presentations by students, faculty and keynote speakers.
  4. Volunteer your time; conference needs facilitators for oral presentations. If interested, contact:

Keynote speakers

Ilhan Omar

Ilhan Omar

Ilhan Omar, Minnesota House representative for District 60B, is an experienced policy analyst, community educator and advocate. She served as the director of policy initiatives at Women Organizing Women, where she empowers East African women to take civic leadership roles in their community. Born in Somalia, Ilhan and her family fled the country’s civil war when she was eight. The family spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya before coming to the United States, eventually settling in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis in 1997. (read more…)

Susan Brower

Susan Brower

Susan Brower is the Minnesota state demographer and directs the state’s Demographic Center. Susan became the state demographer in February 2012. In that capacity, she travels the state talking with Minnesotans about the new social and economic realities that are brought about by recent demographic shifts. Susan’s work applies an understanding of demographic trends to changes in a range of areas including the state’s economy and workforce, education, health, immigration and rural population changes. Fine Arts Festival 2017

The college’s annual Fine Arts Festival is happening at the same place and time—Fine Arts building April 19–20, 2017. Free and open to the public, the event features 20 workshops, demonstrations and sessions presented by the college’s Art, Music and Theatre departments.
