Motivating young women in science + mathematics
Can girls be biologists, engineers and health care professionals? Yes. And the planning starts now! The Expanding Your Horizons Conference on the campus of Inver Hills Community College Saturday, April 30, 2016, will provide valuable information on Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture and Math (STEAM) careers for girls in grades 6–8.

Keynote Speaker: Kaitlin Tyler
Kaitlin Tyler is currently a graduate student in Materials Science and Engineering at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Her research focuses on taking different materials and trying to alter their structure on the micro and nanoscale to change how they interact with light. She is also heavily involved in STEM outreach and hopes to be a professor after getting her degree. She didn’t always live in Illinois though; she graduated from Apple Valley High School in 2008!

Parent Workshops
Preparing for College Finances
Sarah Butler is a Dakota County extension educator for financial empowerment. She will talk about minimizing and preparing for debt.
College Pathways
Inver Hills Community College admissions teams will present on how to start thinking about the smartest college pathway options.
College Lab Experiences
Topics will include:
- Comparative anatomy
- Population sampling in an ecosystem
- Computer programming
- Quality of aquatic ecosystems
- Oil spill remediation
