Voting is now open to choose the contest winner from five finalists
Inver Hills Community College is pleased to report voting is now open to select the winner of the First-Generation No-Essay Scholarship Contest for spring semester 2024 from a group of five contest finalists. Alicia Atwater, a TRIO Student Support Services (TRIO SSS) academic advisor at the college, announced Thursday morning, February 22, 2024, that voting is underway.
“On behalf of the First-Generation Scholarship Committee and Co-Chairs Kenny Flores, Niah Haro, and Ram Perez, we invite you to vote on the five finalists for our scholarship to help choose the top winner!” Alicia said.
Alicia explained that the scholarship was designed by a former TRIO SSS student mentor, Annabelle Knowles, with the goal to spread awareness of the varied experiences of first-generation college students.
Students participating in the contest were asked to directly answer the question, What does being a first-generation college student mean to you? Submissions were original work that used the creative arts to answer the question via poetry, short story, music, mixed media, visual art, performance, and more.
“We cordially invite you to celebrate these five fantastic people by attending the TRIO SSS First-Generation Scholarship Reception Tuesday, February 27, 2024, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre,” Alicia added.
