Inver Hills Theatre is presenting The Doctor in Spite of Himself in the Black Box Theatre in the Fine Arts building on the Inver Hills Community College campus in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota.
Directed by George Roesler, the play will have four performances, Friday, April 21, Saturday, April 22, Friday, April 28, and Saturday, April 29, 2023; all performances start at 7:30 p.m.
The Doctor in Spite of Himself (Le Médecin malgré lui) is a comedy written by French playwright Molière in 1666. Sganarelle is a woodcutter who in the past was an assistant to a physician and loves to brag about it. His wife Martine decides to get a little revenge after an argument.
When a couple of servants to the wealthy Geronte come looking for a doctor to cure Geronte’s daughter Lucinde, Martine quickly jumps at the chance and offers up Sganarelle. He is, she says, an eccentric physician who will only admit that fact when he is beaten.
The servants promptly “convince” Sganarelle to go with them to Geronte’s house. Then things start to go crazy. Throw in a befuddled father, a domineering wet-nurse and her jealous husband, two star-crossed lovers, and a couple of not-too-bright peasants and you have one of the greatest farces ever written.
