Renovated area key piece of project list that advances student learning and encompasses IT Center, Testing Center and all three floors of Library building
Inver Hills Community College is hosting an open house for a renovated, state-of-the-art Learning Center on the second floor of the college’s Library building. The event takes place in the Learning Center Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2014, from 2 p.m. till 4 p.m. The new Learning Center features several improvements that promote individual study and group work. A new reception area has substantially improved workflow for the center’s resources, ensuring that the space is utilized to provide optimum services. Wall spaces were enhanced to give students another learning tool.
Learning Center resources
- Six group study rooms with whiteboard walls
- 24 computers for student use
- Dragon NaturallySpeaking and Kurzweil assistive technology
- More than 30 peer tutors to help in various subjects
- 10 offices housing math, English and reading faculty
- Four professional tutors for math and writing
- Tables for individual or group study
College services located in the new Learning Center include:IHCC Library on the Library building’s main floor as well as an office area for faculty and staff on the building’s third floor. The latter space was previously occupied by the college’s IT department, which relocated three years ago to a remodeled daycare building on campus. The main-floor library renovation was completed less than two years ago. Also relocated was the college’s Testing Center, which operates in the College Center in a converted business conference area. The Library building’s new roof replicates cedar shakes and was funded as a $916,000 HEAPR project.
“Renovating all three floors of the Library building, the IT department’s new space and the Testing Center’s new space was financed debt-free using college funds,” said Tim Wynes, J.D., IHCC president. “The reclaimed spaces are far more beautiful and exceptionally functional. The renovated Library and Learning Center provide tremendous assets for our students.”
Wynes and Dee Bernard, the college’s CFO, thanked Patrick Buhl, the college’s director of facilities planning and management, and his staff for their excellent work over the course of the renovations. Bernard added that the no-debt, college-funded projects represent a strategic approach in the use of resources, an approach designed to keep campus facilities at their best for years to come. She noted that the Library building’s entrances, restrooms and mechanical areas are also under consideration for improvements.
“We are committed to serving Inver Hills students with facilities that advance their ability to learn,” Bernard said. “Renovating the IHCC Library, Learning Center, Testing Center and IT Center enhances the academic experience for all our students.”
The following projects were financed with previous-year fund balances
- Library building (three floors: IHCC Library, Learning Center and faculty/staff office area): $4 million
- IT building (daycare building remodel): $902,000
- Testing Center (business conference area conversion): $157,000
