November 21, 2022 • 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. • Minnesota State Capitol
The Nellie Stone Johnson Statue Unveiling will be held Monday, November 21, 2022, at the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul. The event will honor the memory and legacy of Nellie Stone Johnson, an American civil rights activist, and her many contributions to the state of Minnesota.
The ceremony will take place 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Capitol Rotunda followed by a reception 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in L’Etoile de Nord on the lower level.
Governor Tim Walz will read a proclamation declaring NSJ Day in the state of Minnesota. In her role as CAAP board chair, Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan will formally present the NSJ Statue to Minnesota Historical Society Director and CEO Kent Whitworth, who will receive the statue on behalf of the people of Minnesota.
Developed and presented by John See, University of Minnesota Education Service, a video honoring Nellie Stone Johnson called Life of an Activist will be shown in its entirety.
Erica Kantola, facilities and operations coordinator at Inver Hills, reported that the Nellie Stone Johnson Scholarship is only available to students in the Minnesota State system. One previous recipient, Ini Eyoh, a Nursing major at Inver Hills, was featured in an Inver Hills News student spotlight story.
“Nellie Stone Johnson was a Minnesota State board trustee for many years,” Erica said. “The scholarship is her namesake. Nellie’s statue will be the first woman of color statue at the Minnesota State Capitol and will represent the first statue dedication at the capitol in more than forty years.”
