Prepares students to articulate conceptions of social justice across multiple perspectives
Inver Hills Community College is offering a new Associate of Arts (A.A.) with an Emphasis in Social Justice starting fall semester 2021. The college also offers a Social Justice certificate for students wishing to expand their social justice skills.
“A group of ten faculty and staff worked on the Social Justice Task Force to create a degree program that gives students the power to articulate the many ways that social justice is conceptualized,” said Barbara C. Curchack, PhD, the college’s dean of liberal arts. “Students in the program will work to understand forms of oppression with the goal to become effective agents of social change.”
Dr. Curchack added that the 60-credit Social Justice A.A. with Emphasis prepares students to transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue a wide variety of majors, including:
- Anthropology
- Communication
- Gender and Women’s Studies
- Ethnic Studies
- Social Justice
- Public Policy
- Political Science
- Sociology
- Criminal Justice
- Social Work
- Pre-Law
- And more!
“The Social Justice A.A. with Emphasis is designed for students who want to build knowledge and skills to make a difference in the lives of people who have been marginalized by our society,” Dr. Curchack said.
Sadie Pendaz-Foster, PhD, teaches courses in the Sociology program at Inver Hills. Dr. Pendaz-Foster worked on the committee that designed the new Social Justice program.
“As a sociologist, I’m excited to have worked on the Social Justice curriculum,” she said. “I’m looking forward to seeing how we in sociology can support the Social Justice program in the future here at Inver Hills.”
