Michael Busch earns college credit in 10 courses while still in high school
Michael Busch, 17, of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, looks a little like “Harvey Specter” on Suits if Harvey was still a high school senior and lettered in three sports. Luckily, Michael does not act like Harvey, who is famous for such lines as “I refuse to answer that on the grounds that I don’t want to.” Michael showed up for his IHN interview with a cheerful smile even though he was on crutches from a high ankle sprain.
Next fall, Michael will be heading to Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina to play NCAA Division I baseball for the Tar Heels. He earned that opportunity by not only excelling at baseball (shortstop), football (quarterback) and hockey (forward) as a Simley High School Spartan, but by also making the most of Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) at Inver Hills Community College. He has completed 10 courses at Inver, earning college credits that he can transfer to UNC.
“PSEO is great if you’re looking to save money and get a jump on your college education,” said Michael, who is thinking about majoring in finance at UNC. He likes the idea of studying math because the problems have exact solutions, which isn’t always the case in other subjects.
Michael’s gift for baseball runs in his family. His dad, an analyst at Flint Hills Resources, loves the game. Michael’s brother, Logan, plays outfield for the North Dakota State Bisons. “I’ve been playing baseball since I was two or three,” Michael said. “My dad’s always been a baseball guy.”
A 6’0, 190-pound senior at Simley, Michael comes from a pretty big family with five sisters, Jamie, 39, Annie, 34, Carrie, 29, Amber, 23, Claire, 15, and two brothers, Luke, 25, and Logan, 20. He likes to hunt and fish in his free time. His ultimate career goal is playing Major League Baseball. In the meantime, he continues to work hard as a Spartan and PSEO student at Inver Hills—and he’s looking forward to the chance to prove himself as a Tar Heel.
“I’ll be a little nervous being so far from home,” he said, “but I know I’m going to get a great education and I’ll be part of a team.”
