Oluwafisayo Ola
Oluwafisayo Ola, 20, started her higher education career at Inver Hills Community College spring semester 2021. Oluwafisayo is earning her Art Transfer Pathway Associate of Fine Arts (A.F.A.) in Art with plans to graduate in May 2023.
A 2019 graduate of Metro Deaf School, Oluwafisayo is leaning toward a career as an art therapist, a path that includes studying early childhood development.
“Art therapy combine my two biggest interests, art and working with children,” Oluwafisayo said. “Art therapy is for everyone of all ages, but I personally hope to work with children.”
Oluwafisayo added that she communicates in American Sign Language. “I do not ‘speak’ English, but I am learning it intensively so I can also communicate in standard English.”
On receiving a $500 Inver Hills Open House Scholarship:
“Winning a scholarship was very unexpected. I attended the Virtual Open House with my sister, but I did not think I would be a recipient. My family was really excited, and they said, ‘This would be the first of many scholarships.’”

Emmaline Nichole Horner
Originally from Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, Emmaline Nichole Horner, 18, graduated from Simley High School in 2020. Emmaline started classes at Inver Hills Community College in fall semester that same year. She is interested in earning her Transfer Pathway Associate of Fine Arts (A.F.A.) in either Art or Theatre.
After graduating from Inver, Emmaline has plans to study art at the University of Wisconsin–River Falls. Her career goals are focused on making a living as a freelance artist. She related that while freelancing offers the opportunity to make her own schedule and be her own boss, she also sees how that approach to her art requires learning a host of skills to be successful.
“I’ve always enjoyed working by myself with clients/customers to bring their characters to life,” she said. “When I was younger, I took on requests from a social media platform, taking no payment other than being credited for the work I made. During that time, I would create a multitude of work, including a couple’s art piece that a man was gifting to his girlfriend. It’s this ability to make people smile from the comfort of my own home that motivates me to pursue this career path. I want to do what I love without someone else telling me how or when I can do it—for me it’s all about the freedom!”
On receiving a $500 Inver Hills Open House Scholarship:
“Receiving this scholarship allowed me to acquire my course materials for the semester. For me, the scholarship was confirmation that I had a chance at success in college. I couldn’t be more honored to have received this scholarship, and I hope to thank the donors in person one day.”
